Vermilion

Vermilion is a non-profit record label based in Meanjin/Brisbane, student-run by Queensland University of Technology, whose roster includes emerging artists such as Soleil, Beake, lui, Alessandro, and more, from this year's lineup. The label has continued to see new artists gain more traction in the Brisbane music scene while providing a safe space for students to develop their skills in this situated practice.

Vermilion High

Under the same label, Vermilion High is a subsection of Vermilion featuring artists from high school. This label gives an opportunity for aspiring musicians to experience what it would be like in a studio and industry and cater to how they want to sound like. We provide a safe space for high schoolers and are supervised through their sessions and give them opportunities to perform live in front of audiences presented by the record label.

My Role

My roles at the record label were photographer on the marketing team and assistant producer on the production team.

As a photographer, I take pictures for artists under the label. My work spans from live performance photography, studio sessions, and promotional shoots, making each artist's aesthetic show through visually. I collaborate closely with artists, producers, and the marketing team to ensure that every image aligns with their creative direction, from social media campaigns to gig photography. My photography aims to document the energy of live music and the energy behind each performance, while supporting the label's branding strategies.

Through my experiences with Vermilion, I’ve developed a multidisciplinary practice that balances photography and production. I have worked across projects that have taught me how to balance creative vision with collaboration, from shooting live performances and promotional content to assisting on productions and contributing as a musician.

Vermilion High artists that I have worked with

Ruby Elizabeth (Assistant Producer & Session Musician)

Ruby is an indie-pop artist inspired by Phoebe Bridgers and Lorde; she has a background in alternative music. As she continues to create, she's one step closer to her goal of making music that connects people. I worked on Ruby Elizabeth's session as an assistant producer and bassist.

Ava Thorn (Supervisor & Production Assistant)

Taking inspiration from Jeff Buckley and Conan Gray, Ava Thorn is a multi-instrumentalist singer/songwriter that strives to make songs that resonate with listeners on a deeper level. Due to the original supervisor not being able to sit in, I volunteered to be a supervisor for this artist for comfort reasons, as the production team was predominantly male. I then later joined as part of the production team as an assistant producer. I assisted her in finding harmonies on her track.
